This year’s Royal Russell CCF summer camp took place at Pirbright Training camp which is a Phase 1 Army training base. Although the weather wasn’t always on our side, we had a lot of fun and learned many valuable skills to use and develop next September and for the future.
During the week we slept out in the field and navigated our way around several stands including first aid, command tasks and a lesson on IEDs. The next day, we were taught platoon battle drills and did a platoon attack in the rain. Although we ended up soaking wet, there was high morale amongst the sections and everyone put in lots of effort to complete the mission.
On Wednesday, we visited Cadet Training Centre, Frimley Park which is the home of all things Army Cadets. There, we completed the Obstacle Course and number of command tasks. The next day we went to Horseshoe Lake and did several water sports including Kayaking, Raft Building, Stand Up Paddle Boarding and Sailing before enjoying a barbecue later in the evening.
On Friday, we went to Ash Range Complex and used the Electronic Target Range (ETR) at 100 & 200 Meters firing live rounds. Many people were able to achieve a First Class shot and some were able to achieve the coveted Marksman qualification. Although the weather was extremely sunny and hot, each section had fun on the range and did their best. Finally, on Saturday, after some admin and packing away, many promotions were given out and many badges were awarded.
